There are a number of factors that make a city attractive for businesses to relocate or expand, as well as for investors to enhance their portfolios through local acquisitions. Among the most important factors to consider are the size and quality of the local office market, which is an essential component of the local economy. The campus creates a safe and nurturing environment with an abundance of resources for a population who struggles with access to basic needs. The Restorative Care Village represents an innovative new approach to providing medical, mental health and addiction, and housing services for underserved and vulnerable communities—providing the support needed to reintegrate into the community. Behind the Scenes: Cannon House Office Building Renewal
Although the interior of the north wing underwent an extensive renovation, the historic exterior of the 112-year-old Cannon Building received a partial facelift. All of the original windows were restored, all exterior stonework was cleaned, and joints were pointed and sealed to make everything water tight. As part of the Cannon Renewal Project, a completely new fifth floor will be constructed during each successive phase.

The AOC's construction representative, Ryan Columbo, led a behind-the-scenes tour after the initial briefing. According to Columbo, the building’s chilled water valves are over fifty years old, and the steam valves are original to the 1908 building. Replacing the corroded steel pipes is not just a cost-saving measure, but it will allow greater control over the systems as deterioration has made it difficult for water to flow.

During the Cannon Renewal, the rotunda's original plaster dome was repaired and painted the historic color, which carries the color of the stone columns up through the cornice and dome to the skylight. The intent is to make the Rotunda look as if it was all made of stone — similar to ancient Greek and Roman structures. The skylight, which was replaced during the project, now allows natural light to filter through the space, highlighting the rotunda's impressive architectural details. Wednesday, more than three hours after the rally began inside the congressional office building.
"The columns are still beautiful," said Klee, "and they reflect a balance between safety and preservation that we needed to strike for this particular project." The building was designed in the form of a hollow trapezoid to admit light to inner offices. On each floor the mahogany doors of the offices flank a 12-foot-wide corridor. There were 397 offices, one for each representative in the 61st Congress, and 14 committee rooms.
The Renewal Process
The Cannon Rotunda, an area of special architectural interest in the building's interior, is located at the main entrance of the building and has a diameter of 57 feet 4 inches. Eighteen Corinthian columns on a marble arcade draw the eye upward and support a richly detailed entablature and coffered dome. Members located in the Cannon Building's four construction zone phases were relocated in at the end of the Congressional session for the following session. All House members have a suite located in the Longworth, Rayburn or Cannon House Office Buildings.
In response to COVID-19, our Blue Cottage of CannonDesign team worked with L.A. County to rethink workplace strategies specifically aimed at reducing leased building space. Our team re-envisioned the county’s portfolio of administrative facilities, resulting in a six percent reduction in leased space and a 14 percent reduction due to alternate ways of working. Our work involved assessing individual departmental needs, evaluating leases, and analyzing and optimizing the total portfolio. County with the potential to realize annualized savings of up to $7 million through lease terminations. How can the Architect of the Capitol ensure the project delivers good value to the taxpayer?

Police departments from neighboring Fairfax County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland, sent officers to assist. A spokesperson with Montgomery County said their officers helped with crowd management outside the buildings.

On hand to discuss the renewal project were Architect of the Capitol Stephen Ayers; Superintendent of House Office Buildings William Weidemeyer; and Historian of the U.S. We testified on project status and cost estimates as part of our assistance with congressional oversight. In some cases, that meant removing loose bits of stone from the columns that could not be securely pinned in place. The small nicks and gaps left behind reflect a treatment where less is often more and any repair work done is seamless or not done at all.
The Cannon Renewal Project, taking place from 2014 through 2025, involves a thorough renovation of the entire building and addresses accessibility and structural issues. The project will conserve and repair the exterior and interior stone and wood, rehabilitate office spaces, and complete a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade, including heating, cooling, lighting, plumbing, fire, and life safety systems. The work also includes the removal of the previous fifth-floor addition—the marble flooring was preserved, however—before building a new, more expansive fifth floor.
Phases 1-4 of the project will require that affected wings of the building be vacated. Members and their staffs will remain in the upper campus, while some Committee and support staff will relocate to the Ford House Office Building or the O'Neill House Office Building. The Cannon Building has not received a comprehensive systems upgrade since the 1930s, and many of the building's systems are original – dating back to 1908 or earlier. The systems are past the end of their useful lives and the increasing risk of their failure jeopardizes the building's long-term functionality and safety. Other necessary work includes upgrading infrastructure systems and repairing the exterior stone façade.
The restrained classical designs of the office buildings were not meant to compete architecturally with either the Capitol or the Library of Congress. Accordingly, the buildings' heights are limited, and the elevations facing the Capitol grounds are identical and reserved. Until 1908, many representatives who wanted office space had to borrow space in committee rooms in the Capitol or rent quarters; otherwise, they worked from their desk in the House Chamber. The Sundry Civil Appropriation Act (3 Stat. 1156) of March 1901 authorized the Architect of the Capitol to draw plans for a fireproof building adjacent to the grounds of the Capitol to be used for offices and storage. Member offices will flank both sides of the corridor, as they do on the lower floors. Work includes demolishing the walls and roof, then rebuilding an entirely new fifth floor. The renewal process is scheduled to take approximately 10 years, with each of the five phases (0-4) aligned to fall between Congressional move cycles.
U.S. Capitol Police closed several roads in the area Wednesday afternoon, but they have since reopened. At 5 p.m., the group was still in the Cannon rotunda chanting "Free Palestine" and singing. Within an hour, though, police announced the rotunda had been cleared and said they were continuing to process the arrests. Officers were still processing the arrests, so they don't have exact numbers yet.
